The mass exposure to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) is an unethical, hazardous experiment on all of humankind. Our health, safety and the environment have been all but forgotten in lieu of financial gain for big corporations. It has yet to be mentioned in any of the debates and yet the use of GMOs has violated our individual rights. No one in government seems able or willing to stop the Biotech bullies from having their way with not only our health, but also our environment. Meanwhile, anyone that raises their hand in protest is discredited or sued by these giant companies.
“We are confronted with the most powerful technology the world has ever known, and it is being rapidly deployed with almost no thought whatsoever to its consequences.” — Dr Suzanne Wuerthele, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) toxicologist
At some level, we all want to believe that the government, through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has our best interest in mind when it gives its approval for any food related technology. However, numerous countries have already banned the import, sale, use and planting of GMOs due to lack of testing and long term study of human health and environmental impact. Yet many Americans don’t even know they are eating genetically engineered food.
The genetically modified ‘versions’ of crops (corn, soy, etc.) have had their genes/DNA manipulated and have been found to have mutations, diseases, abnormalities and excess chemicals - which “we” then ingest and feed to our families. We not only eat the byproducts made from these crops, but we also eat the animals (pork, chicken, beef, etc.) that are fed the same GMO diet. Unless you are consciously trying to avoid them, you are unintentionally eating food that has been genetically modified with nearly every meal.
Interestingly, the so-called ‘safety’ standards for GMO foods are conducted by the Biotech companies, not the FDA. These are biased studies that provide absolutely no insight into the long-term effects of GMOs on humans. Since the introduction of GMOs in the food industry, fertility has decreased, while cancer, autism, ADHD, Diabetes, Thyroid disease (and many more diseases) have all increased. Although we may not be able to definitively point to GMOs as the culprit at this point in time, is this truly just a coincidence?
GMOs should be banned altogether. At a minimum they should be labeled on every package so that we can choose or not choose GMO foods for ourselves. Why the U.S. Government and the FDA do not require anything Genetically Modified to be even identified on ingredient lists is beyond me. If there are no issues with these GMO crops, why are the Biotech companies spending millions and millions of dollars trying to prevent any labeling of GMO products? The Biotech companies are conducting a massive experiment on us without our knowledge or consent. We are nothing more than lab rats with no individual rights.
This is not an issue for Democrats or Republicans, but an issue for Americans. As individuals we have the right to know what is in our food, and to decide whether or not we want it on our plates. I applaud California for putting proposition 37 onto the ballot in November. I can only hope they are more successful than the other states that were thwarted in their efforts to require GMO labeling by the Biotech companies and the fraudulent lobbyists that put money before our health.
We continuously talk about the rising costs of healthcare, yet we refuse to look at what is causing the ever increasing health issues. It could be as simple as the food we eat. At a minimum, we deserve the right to know what is in our food, and should have the ability to decline any further involvement in the GMO experiment. It is time for everyone to become educated on GMOs. In this case ignorance is not bliss; ignorance is costly and detrimental to our health.
Outside the United States, more than 50 countries require labeling of GMOs. It is time that America, a country that has allowed the widespread use and distribution of GMOs do the same. As individuals, we need to lead the country in what is right – demand the labeling of GMO ingredients in our food, and boycott the use of them whenever possible.
The European Union and many other countries in Europe have banned the use of GMOs due to concerns over health and environmental issues. Let’s stop the Biotech/Chemical companies from lining their pockets at the expense of America’s health!
